Three Days of High-Altitude Trekking and Mountaineering in the Heart of Mendoza’s Andes

3-Day 4,000m Expedition in the Cordón del Plata

Located within easy reach of Mendoza, Vallecitos is one of Argentina’s classic high-altitude trekking and mountaineering areas.

The Cordón del Plata rises dramatically from the Mendoza foothills and contains an extraordinary concentration of Andean peaks, making it an excellent destination for everything from trekking and first high-altitude experiences to serious mountaineering objectives.

This three-day expedition gives you a compact way to experience that environment without committing to a long expedition.

It is close enough to Mendoza to be practical, yet high and remote enough to feel unmistakably Andean.

Three days in the high Andes. One expedition built around you.

Just outside Mendoza, the mountains of Vallecitos and the Cordón del Plata offer the opportunity to leave the city behind and, in only three days, experience a genuine high-altitude expedition in the Andes.

This private 3-day trekking and mountaineering program is designed for active travelers who want more than a conventional hike. You will carry a backpack, establish a mountain camp, sleep at altitude and attempt a summit above 4,000 meters, accompanied by a professional local mountain guide.

The primary objective is Cerro Adolfo Calle (4,250 m), one of the classic 4,000-meter summits of the Cordón del Plata.

Depending on your fitness, previous experience, acclimatization, weather and mountain conditions, the program may also include Cerro Stepanek (4,150 m).

For stronger and more experienced participants looking for a more demanding objective, Cerro San Bernardo can also be considered as an alternative. San Bernardo represents a harder undertaking and is only proposed when the guide considers it appropriate for the group and the conditions.

The result is not a fixed itinerary designed for everyone. It is a tailor-made mountain expedition in Mendoza, adapted to the people actually climbing.

Adolfo Calle & Stepanek

Cerro Adolfo Calle (4,250 m) is the main summit objective of the expedition.

Its location in the Vallecitos area makes it an excellent mountain for experiencing the Cordón del Plata without the longer commitment required by the range’s 5,000 and 6,000-meter peaks.

If conditions and timing allow, Cerro Stepanek (4,150 m) can be incorporated into the experience, giving the expedition the possibility of reaching two different 4,000-meter summits.

The decision is always made according to the actual conditions in the mountains rather than simply following a predetermined schedule.

Looking for Something Harder? Cerro San Bernardo

For participants arriving with stronger fitness, previous experience at altitude and the motivation for a more demanding challenge, we can evaluate Cerro San Bernardo as an alternative objective.

This option requires a greater physical commitment than the standard Adolfo Calle and Stepanek program and is therefore considered individually.

Before proposing San Bernardo, we assess your experience, acclimatization, fitness, current mountain conditions and the available weather window.

The objective is not simply to choose the highest or hardest mountain. It is to select the best 4,000-meter climbing experience for your particular group.

A Tailor-Made Mountaineering Experience in Mendoza

This expedition is organized privately and customized from the beginning.

Before confirming the program, we review your:

  • Previous trekking and mountaineering experience
  • Experience above 3,000 or 4,000 meters
  • Current physical condition
  • Acclimatization before the expedition
  • Number of participants
  • Available dates
  • Personal and technical equipment
  • Preferred mountain objectives
  • Requirements for carrying equipment and additional logistical support

With this information, we determine the most suitable approach and prepare the final itinerary and quotation.

This flexibility also makes the program suitable for people using the Cordón del Plata as preparation for longer Andes mountaineering expeditions or Aconcagua.

Professional Mountain Guides in Mendoza

Throughout the expedition you will be accompanied by a professional local mountain guide familiar with Vallecitos, the Cordón del Plata and the conditions of the Central Andes.

Behind the guide is our operational team in Mendoza.

We coordinate transportation, food, camping equipment, route planning, logistics, weather information and contingency options before entering the mountains.

Having this structure in place allows the guide to concentrate on the essential decisions during the expedition: the group, the terrain, the weather, the pace and the mountain.

Is This Expedition for You?

This program is particularly suitable if you are an active traveler looking for your first 4,000-meter summit, a trekker wanting to progress into mountaineering, or an experienced hiker searching for a short but substantial mountain objective while visiting Mendoza.

You should be comfortable walking for several hours, carrying a backpack and sleeping in a tent.

Previous technical climbing experience is not necessarily required for the standard objectives, but good physical preparation is important.

Reaching a 4,000-meter summit is never guaranteed. Weather, altitude, individual condition and mountain conditions ultimately determine what is possible.

That uncertainty is part of a genuine mountain expedition.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Into the Cordón del Plata & High-Altitude Camp

We leave Mendoza in the morning and drive toward Vallecitos, the gateway to some of the most iconic peaks of the Cordón del Plata.

Once in the mountains, we organize our backpacks and begin the approach trek. Our destination is Veguitas Superior, located at approximately 3,440 meters (11,286 ft), where we will establish our high-altitude camp.

Although the distance is relatively short, this first day is an important introduction to the altitude and the dynamics of a real mountain expedition. Each participant carries their personal equipment and shares part of the group food and common gear.

Once at camp, we set up the tents, recover from the approach and prepare our equipment for the following day’s summit attempt. After dinner, we settle in for our first night surrounded by the high Andes.

Approx. distance: 2.8 km
Elevation gain: +440 m
Camp altitude: 3,440 m
Estimated hiking time: 2–3 hours

Day 2 — Summit Day in the Andes

We start early for the most demanding and rewarding day of the expedition.

Leaving camp behind, we gradually gain altitude across the rugged high-mountain terrain of the Cordón del Plata, making our way toward our primary objective: the summit of Cerro Adolfo Calle at 4,250 meters (13,944 ft).

As we climb higher, altitude, weather and terrain will determine our pace and strategy for the day.

After reaching Adolfo Calle, and provided the group is moving well and mountain conditions remain favorable, we may have the opportunity to extend the adventure toward the nearby Cerro Stepanek at 4,150 meters (13,615 ft).

The decision to continue will always be made by the guide based on timing, weather, acclimatization, the physical condition of the participants and the overall safety of the group.

After our summit attempt, we descend back to camp for a well-earned rest and our second night in the mountains.

Approx. distance: 8.5 km
Elevation gain: +850 m
Maximum altitude: 4,250 m
Estimated hiking time: 7–8 hours

Day 3 — Descent & Return to Mendoza

After breakfast and one final morning surrounded by the peaks of the Cordón del Plata, we break camp, repack our equipment and begin our descent.

We follow the valley back toward the trailhead, gradually leaving the high-altitude environment behind.

Our vehicle will be waiting at the end of the trail for the drive back to Mendoza, where we normally arrive during the afternoon.

Three compact but rewarding days of trekking, camping and mountaineering in the Mendoza Andes come to an end.

Approx. distance: 2.8 km
Elevation loss: –440 m
Starting altitude: 3,440 m
Estimated hiking time: 2 hours

Important Information

This is a private, tailor-made mountain expedition, which means the itinerary and summit objectives can be adapted according to the participants’ previous experience, physical condition and acclimatization.

Cerro Adolfo Calle is our primary objective, while Cerro Stepanek may be added when conditions and timing allow.

For participants with stronger fitness, previous high-altitude experience and appropriate acclimatization, we can also evaluate a more demanding objective such as Cerro San Bernardo. In this case, the itinerary may be adjusted accordingly.

As with any high-altitude expedition, reaching a summit can never be guaranteed. Weather, mountain conditions, acclimatization, group pace and the professional judgment of the guide will determine how each day develops.

Safety will always take priority over reaching a summit.
